Fluxcore or Gas Many wire feeder welders on the market today come with the capability to weld with 2 different processes: MIG with solid wire and external shielding gas or Self-Shielded Flux Core with Innershield wire and no external gas. A beginner welder may be intimidated by welding with gas, but to ensure the best type of welding process for your application consider the following points. The MIG process with external gas is best used when welding on 10 gauge and lighter material, when welds will be painted, and in shop applications where there is little risk of cross draft and portability is not as important. Flux core welding is best for joining 16 gauge and heavier materials, applications where portability is important, and when welding outside where it may be windy. When MIG welding, I choose Lincoln's premium copper coated MIG wire SuperArc L-56. Most automotive manufacturers now mandate this type of wire for any automotive repairs. When flux-core welding, I use Lincoln's all-position NR-211-MP wire to achieve the best bead appearance. |
